Journey of a Scribe with Viktor Kams
Viktor literally stumbled into calligraphy during a vacation to Istanbul in 2007. He had been playing with letters in his graffiti but confesses to having had no understanding of how letterforms have definite shapes, texture and rhythm. Observing Turkish street artists freely using the broad edge pen in spontaneous designs fired his imagination and propelled him to begin a serious study of calligraphy. Self-taught from on-line videos he soon realized that he needed to study in person with practicing professionals, thus beginning intensive classes with John Stevens, Luca Barcellona, Yves Leterme, among many other luminaries.
Viktor's work runs the gamut from formal, precise letterforms to ecstatically free and expressive brushwork to enviably crisp hand-embossing to audacious tattooing, all created in his Madrid studio. Custom logos and graphic designs for posters and digital publicity, as well as teaching both in Spain and abroad, form the greater part of his output. His work has been featured in select books and magazines, including Dasher, Type, The Design of Words, Speedball Textbook (25th edition), Alphabet, and Caligraphía Española, among others.
