In-Person Workshop

Introduction to the Flat Brush with Viktor Kams

This class will introduce you to the flat brush as a sensuous tool for calligraphy. Students will learn the technique that Viktor uses while working with flat brushes, whether small brushes on paper or larger ones on vertical surfaces such as canvases or walls. The class will focus on Italics as the reference script to learn and apply the particular method of how this tool is manipulated. We will compare and contrast this technique with other tools like broad edge pens. There will be demos of other scripts during the class to show the participants how the technique does not necessarily limit itself to italics.

Handouts will be provided to support the content of the class.

The class is open to students of all levels (Beginners included) but previous notions of the Italic hand will definitely be helpful.

MATERIALS LIST

  • A few flat brushes of different sizes. I mostly use Windsor and Newton, Raphael Kaerell and Manet Galaxy 792, but many other brushes work just as well so long as they are not too soft.

  • Basic watercolor pallet (Windsor and Newton or Schmincke); others are good too.

  • Walnut or sumi ink (liquid or stick) or gouache.

  • Acrylic ink to write on fabric.

  • Drawing or craft paper are good for practice and a few sheets of better paper to test

  • Square containers with straight edges for medium; old brushes for mixing and cloth or paper towel.

  • A piece of cotton fabric to write on.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR

Viktor hails from Madrid, Spain where he operates his studio specializing in calligraphy, type design, and tattooing. In the 1990s he was a practicing graffiti artist, but in the early 2000s he began studying graphic design in England which ultimately led to his introduction to calligraphy via Denis Brown. Viktor then went on to study with leading calligraphers including Claude Mediavilla, Luca Barcellona, Yves Leterme, and Carl Rohrs, among others. He has become a leading practitioner of the art and has exhibited in the National Library of Spain, the Design Centers of Milan and Manila, as well as teaching in many European cities, and his work has been featured in numerous type and calligraphy publications
