Materials Lists

Susan Steele, Holiday CoasterS

  • Cork beverage coaster base: Either round or square, around 4”.
My round coasters are 3.75” (see photo in presentation) and about 0.375” or 3/8” thick.  The square coasters I purchased came in at 4” and about 0.25” or ¼” thick.  I preferred the round cork coaster base as it was thicker and slightly beveled.

  • Drawing compass such as Alvin

  • Grid paper for planning your design

  • Drawing/drafting pencil – 4H or mechanical drafting pencil such as Koh-I-Noor

  • Pencil sharpener such as the Stanley Bostitch Professional Electric Pencil Sharpener or Alvin Mini-Rotary Lead Pointer for mechanical drafting pencils

  • Kneaded eraser

  • Pen nib of your choice compatible with watercolor paper (use smoother side of paper)

  • Moon Palace Sumi Ink or Winsor & Newton Gouache for calligraphy portions

  • Arches hot press 140-pound watercolor paper if you want a smooth surface to work with or cold press if you want a texture.

  • X-Acto knife and blades or sharp, small scissors

  • Cutting mat

  • Paints or colored pencils

  • Watercolor paints - I recommend Winsor &Newton or NEW mini palettes from Van Gogh in groups of pre-mixed coordinated colors (“Shades of Nature” was used for the presentation as well as Finetec Mica watercolors for accents)

  • Mixing Palette – 6 wells

  • Colored pencil recommendations: Prismacolor, Derwent or Faber-Castell

  • Water cups

  • Paper towels: Viva

  • Paint brushes for fine work (00, #2, #3 rounds) plus a few inexpensive mixing brushes.
Brands to consider: Grumbacher, Winsor & Newton, Cotman

  • Wax paper: cut into squares to cover finished and glued coaster artwork to press while drying

  • Mod Podge glue: to adhere finished artwork to cork coaster base.

Optional and for more advanced work:

  • Pigma Micron Markers (fine or .01) if desired, for outlining painted artwork

  • Cotton gloves – snug fitting to keep hand oils off artwork

  • Lightbox – for tracing and developing your layouts

  • Artist lamp with magnifier – for intricate and detailed work
