Fall 2021 Workshops: Brush Regularly with Society of Scribes!

This fall is all about brushes at the Society of Scribes, and we have two masters of the brush to lead the way. Flat brush? Pointed brush? We’ve got you covered with these exciting new online courses.

On the Pointed Brush is Luca Barcellona

We are pumped to announce that Milan’s Luca Barcellona returns to the Society of Scribes following last year’s wildly popular blackletter sessions. This time the maestro of expressive calligraphy treats us to another one of his specialties: the pointed brush. We’ll get the basics down with a formal style using brush pens, before graduating to more expressive and individualized forms.

Dates: November 13, 20, 27, and December 11, 2021 (four Saturdays)

On the Flat Brush is John Downer

John Downer has seen it all. With over 50 years of sign-painting experience, a number of bestselling typeface designs under his belt, and an encyclopedic knowledge of commercial lettering traditions inside and outside of the United States, John is a one-person lettering institution. Budding sign painters and type designers alike flock to John for his knowledge and critique. Now he’s spending four full days with us (virtually) to work on our flat-brush chops, as we learn the ins and outs of the Block and Thick & Thin sign-painting lettering styles. But hurry, class enrollment is limited!

Dates: October 16, 17, 30 and 31, from 11:00 am to 6:00 pm Eastern time (four full days, with a one-hour lunch break)
