Society Publications

Over the years, Society of Scribes has released various publications including an award-winning Calligraphy Journal, the SOS Studio Handbook, and the limited-edition Journal series Letters from New York. Here you will find a collection of excerpts from these publications, which we hope to grow over time as a resource for the calligraphy community.

Our award-winning Journal features an article tracing the origins and the development of handwriting in America by Jane Blundell and the Journal staff. Also, an article, with illustrations, by Robert Williams on the first copy books printed and used in the original 13 colonies. There are additional articles discussing Uncials by Patricia Buttice, a portfolio of Werner Schneider’s calligraphy and type designs with anecdotal comments by Paul Shaw and How to Analyze a Manuscript Hand by Alice Koeth.
